AVI to MP4
Convert old AVI videos to MP4 that plays almost everywhere.
AVI is one of the oldest video formats still around, dating from the early 1990s. Old camcorder clips, digital camera videos and downloaded files often come as AVI, and phones, browsers and TVs frequently won't play them. MP4 fixes that.
Almost any file
Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.
No ads, no watermarks
With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.
Private by default
Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.
How to convert AVI to MP4
- Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
- Choose your AVI files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
- Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
- Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.
What happens to the video
AVI files usually hold older codecs, such as MPEG-4 Part 2 or Motion JPEG, so the picture is encoded again as H.264 and the sound as AAC. The result is often smaller than the AVI and plays on current devices. An AVI that already holds H.264 is copied across without encoding it again.
Old footage
Standard-definition clips keep their own size unless you choose another. Enlarging them to 1080p in the settings makes a bigger file without adding detail, so it's only worth it when something insists on that size.
How it counts
Each AVI turned into MP4 counts as one of your videos. With a free account you can convert 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. Conversion happens on Filebender's servers, and files are deleted an hour after converting.

Questions
Will the MP4 look better?
It will look like the AVI, not better. Encoding again keeps what's there, and at the default quality adds very little loss of its own.
Can I shrink it for sharing?
Yes. Choose a size in MB in the settings, or the Email preset for under 10 MB. Filebender works out the bitrate from the video's length and encodes it twice to land just under the size you choose.
What if the AVI has no sound?
That's fine; the MP4 is silent too. A file with no picture at all is refused, with a suggestion to make an audio file such as an MP3 instead.
Is Filebender free?
Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.
What happens to my files?
It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
Is there a size limit?
With a free account, each file can be up to 500 MB (about 4 minutes of HD phone video), and a batch can have up to 20 files. Any pass takes files up to 2 GB (about 15 minutes of HD video).
