PDF Compressor

Shrink PDFs for email and upload limits, keeping the text sharp.

Choose Light, Balanced or Strong, or give a size in KB or MB and Filebender tries settings until the PDF fits under it, for an email, an upload form or a storage limit.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to use the PDF Compressor

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your PDF files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Choose how small: a strength, or a target size you choose. The gear button has more settings.
  4. Press “Compress”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Where the size goes

Most of a large PDF is pictures: photos, scans and illustrations. Compressing lowers their resolution and saves them at a lower quality, while text and drawings stay as they are, sharp and searchable. Fonts are cut down to the letters the document uses.

Strength and resolution

This page lowers pictures to Ebook (150 DPI) by default, which looks sharp on screen, and Light, Balanced and Strong set their quality (88, 75 and 55 out of 100). In the settings, Print (300 DPI) suits documents you'll print, Email (72 DPI) makes the smallest files, and Keep resolution only recompresses.

The size you choose

With a size, Filebender tries lower picture resolutions and qualities in turn, starting with the lightest, and keeps the first result that fits. If even the smallest is too big, it tells you how small it got, so you can split the PDF or raise the size.

Scans

Turn on Scanned document in the settings when every page is a scan or a photo. Colour and grey pages are then kept to 150 DPI, and black and white pages are stored the way fax machines store them, which suits scans. If a PDF comes out bigger than it went in, Filebender says so and you can keep the original.

Questions

Does compressing affect the text?

No. Text stays as text, so it's as sharp and searchable as before. Only pictures lose detail.

Why is my PDF still big?

It may have little to take out: a PDF of text is small already, and drawings made of lines can't shrink much. For PDFs full of photos, try Strong, or Email (72 DPI) in the settings.

Can I compress a scan and make it searchable?

Yes, in two steps: make it searchable with Make a PDF Searchable, then compress the result here. Each step counts as one file.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
