M4A to MP3
Convert M4A audio, like iPhone voice memos, to MP3.
M4A is the audio-only kind of MP4 file, made by iPhone voice recordings, music downloads and many recording apps. MP3 plays on more devices, from old music players to car stereos, and it's what many upload forms ask for.
Almost any file
Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.
No ads, no watermarks
With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.
Private by default
Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.
How to convert M4A to MP3
- Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
- Choose your M4A files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
- Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
- Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.
What's inside an M4A
Usually AAC, a lossy format much like MP3; sometimes Apple Lossless, which keeps every detail. From AAC, choose a bitrate at least as high as the original's so the conversion doesn't add audible loss. From Apple Lossless, 256 or 320 kbps keeps music sounding as it should.
Voice recordings
Speech needs far less than music: 64 or 96 kbps keeps a voice clear at a fraction of the size, which helps with email and messaging limits. Press Trim to cut the silence before and after.
Details and limits
Recording names, artists and album details are removed by default; tick “Keep photo details” in the settings to keep them. Album art isn't copied.
Each M4A counts as one ordinary file: with a free account you can convert 20 a day, each up to 500 MB. Files are converted on Filebender's servers and deleted an hour after converting.

Questions
Why is the MP3 bigger than the M4A?
MP3 needs a higher bitrate than AAC to sound the same, and if you chose a higher bitrate than the M4A's, the file grows with it. Pick 128 kbps or lower for a smaller file.
Can I keep it as AAC?
Yes: choose AAC in the Audio Converter. If you don't trim it or set a size, the sound is copied as it is, with no loss.
Can I convert many recordings at once?
Yes. Add them together and each becomes its own MP3, to download one by one or in a single ZIP.
Is Filebender free?
Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.
What happens to my files?
It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
Is there a size limit?
With a free account, each file can be up to 500 MB (about 4 minutes of HD phone video), and a batch can have up to 20 files. Any pass takes files up to 2 GB (about 15 minutes of HD video).
