MOV to MP4

Convert iPhone and QuickTime MOV videos to MP4.

MOV is Apple's QuickTime format, used by iPhones, Macs and many cameras. MP4 holds the same kinds of video and sound but is accepted far more widely: by Windows, Android, TVs, editing apps and upload forms.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to convert MOV to MP4

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your MOV files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
  4. Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Copied or encoded again

If the MOV holds H.264 video, as many do, Filebender copies the picture into an MP4 unchanged with the default settings, which takes seconds and loses nothing. iPhones usually record HEVC (H.265), which is encoded again as H.264 by default so the MP4 plays almost everywhere. Choose H.265 in the settings to keep the smaller HEVC video; a standard-range one is then copied across as well.

Location and dates

Phone videos record where and when they were filmed. Filebender removes that by default, as it does for photos, so a video you share doesn't give a place away. Tick “Keep photo details” in the settings to keep it.

Size and limits

Phone video is large. With a free account you can convert 2 videos a day as part of 20 files, each up to 500 MB; a pass raises the number of videos and takes files up to 2 GB. Each MOV is converted on Filebender's servers and deleted an hour after converting.

The MP4 is arranged so it can start playing before it has finished downloading.

Questions

Why does one MOV take longer than another?

A copy takes seconds, but encoding again, as most iPhone HEVC videos need, takes time in proportion to length and resolution. 4K clips take a while; choosing 1080p in the settings makes them quicker and smaller.

Is the sound kept?

Yes. AAC sound, the usual kind in MOV files, is copied along with the picture when the picture is copied; otherwise it's encoded as AAC at 128 kbps, or the bitrate you choose.

Can I trim it first?

Yes. Press Trim on the file and keep only the part you want. A trimmed video is always encoded again, so the cut falls where you set it.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.

Is there a size limit?

With a free account, each file can be up to 500 MB (about 4 minutes of HD phone video), and a batch can have up to 20 files. Any pass takes files up to 2 GB (about 15 minutes of HD video).
