MP4 to MP3

Take the audio out of an MP4 video as an MP3.

Most MP4 videos carry their sound as AAC. MP4 to MP3 turns that sound into an MP3, the audio format almost every player, car stereo and podcast app accepts, and leaves the picture behind.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your MP4 files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
  4. Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Choosing the bitrate

At 128 kbps, the default, an MP3 takes about 1 MB a minute; at 320 kbps, about 2.3 MB. The AAC in a video is often 128 to 192 kbps already, so 192 kbps is a sensible ceiling for most MP4s, and going higher only makes the file bigger.

Lossy to lossy

AAC and MP3 both leave out sounds that are hard to hear, and converting one to the other does it a second time. At the same or a higher bitrate that loss is very hard to notice. If your app accepts AAC, choose AAC instead: when the MP4's sound is AAC and you don't trim it or set a size, it's copied straight out with no loss at all.

How it counts

An MP3 taken from an MP4 counts as one ordinary file, not a video: with a free account, 20 a day, from MP4s up to 500 MB each. Before you convert, Filebender shows how big the MP3 will be, from its bitrate and length. The MP4 is handled on Filebender's servers and deleted an hour after converting.

Questions

Can I make a clip or a ringtone?

Yes. Press Trim on the MP4, set the start and end to a tenth of a second, and only that part becomes the MP3.

Can I convert several MP4s at once?

Yes. Add them together and each becomes its own MP3, ready to download one by one or together in a ZIP.

Does it work with long phone videos?

Yes. Only the sound is kept, so the MP3 is small even when the video is big. The MP4 itself has to fit your plan: with a free account, 20 files a day of up to 500 MB each, or up to 2 GB a file with a pass.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
