WEBP to PNG

Convert WEBP images to PNG, keeping transparency.

WEBP is the image format many websites serve because it keeps pages light. Save one from a web page and your editor, slideshow or older app may refuse it. PNG opens almost everywhere and, like WEBP, can be see-through, so transparent backgrounds come across as they are.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to convert WEBP to PNG

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your WEBP files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
  4. Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Lossy or lossless WEBP

A WEBP can be saved either way. If it was lossy, the PNG is a faithful copy of what the WEBP shows, compression marks included, since converting can't restore detail. If it was lossless, nothing at all is lost. Either way the PNG is usually bigger, because PNG stores every pixel without shortcuts.

Animated WEBP

PNG can't move, so an animated WEBP becomes a PNG of its first frame. To keep the animation, choose GIF from the format list instead.

Where it's converted

If your browser can read WEBP and the file is a still image of up to 50 MB, it converts on your device, so the picture isn't uploaded. It still counts as one of your files, and you need to be signed in to your account as usual. Animated WEBPs, and those with colour profiles beyond standard sRGB, are converted on Filebender's servers instead.

Questions

Why is my PNG bigger than the WEBP?

WEBP was designed to make small files for the web, while PNG keeps every pixel as it is. A photo can grow several times over. If you don't need transparency, JPG makes a far smaller file from a photo.

What if a saved picture isn't really a WEBP?

Some sites serve WEBP under a .jpg or .png name, and the reverse happens too. Filebender reads what the file actually is from its contents and tells you when the name doesn't match.

Is there a limit?

With a free account you can convert 20 files a day, each up to 500 MB. A pass adds more files and takes each one up to 2 GB.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
