AVIF to JPG

Convert AVIF images to JPG so almost any app can open them.

AVIF is a newer image format that makes much smaller files than JPG at the same quality. Browsers display it and more websites serve it, but many editors, printers and upload forms still expect JPG.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your AVIF files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
  4. Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

What's kept

The picture is saved as JPG at quality 82, turned the right way up, with location and camera details removed by default. AVIF can hold transparency and JPG can't, so transparent areas are filled with white or the colour you choose.

Expect the JPG to be bigger than the AVIF, since JPG needs more space for the same quality. Resizing in the same step, or lowering the quality, brings it back down.

HDR pictures

Some AVIF photos carry more brightness range than a standard screen shows, for HDR displays. JPG has no room for that range, so bright highlights can look flatter in the JPG than they did on an HDR screen.

Where it's converted

If your browser can open AVIF, a still AVIF of up to 50 MB in standard colour converts on your device and isn't uploaded. It still counts as one of your files, and you need to be signed in to your account. Animated AVIFs, wide-colour pictures and browsers that can't read AVIF use Filebender's servers.

Questions

Why can't my apps open AVIF?

The format is only a few years old. Browsers added it first, and desktop editors and older phones are still catching up. JPG works almost everywhere in the meantime.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG instead?

Yes: use the Image Converter and pick PNG, which keeps any transparency and loses nothing more, at the cost of a bigger file.

How many AVIF files can I convert?

Each file counts once. With a free account you can convert 20 a day, up to 500 MB each; passes allow more files, each up to 2 GB.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
