Compress PNG

Make PNGs smaller without losing a single pixel, or to the size you choose with fewer colours.

By default, PNG compression here keeps every pixel: the picture looks identical and only the way it's stored changes, which suits screenshots, diagrams, logos and anything with text, where lossy formats would leave marks. Only a size in KB or MB trades colours for a smaller file.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to use the PNG Compressor

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your PNG files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Choose how small: a strength, or a target size you choose. The gear button has more settings.
  4. Press “Compress”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Lossless by default

On Filebender's servers the PNG is saved at the highest compression level and then run through an extra optimiser that repacks the data without touching a pixel. How much you save depends on how the PNG was made: files from screenshot tools and some editors often shrink noticeably, while one that's already optimised may barely change.

Light, Balanced and Strong all give the same lossless PNG.

When you need it smaller

Give a size in KB or MB and Filebender reduces the picture to a palette of up to 256 colours, a lossy step that can cut a PNG to a fraction of its size. Graphics with few colours come through well; photos and smooth gradients can show bands. Resizing, or converting to WEBP, are the other ways to go much smaller.

Where it's compressed

Every PNG is compressed on Filebender's servers, since the extra optimiser only runs there, and is deleted an hour after converting. If a result ever comes out bigger than the original, you're told and can keep the original instead.

Questions

Why didn't my PNG get much smaller?

It was probably stored efficiently already. Lossless compression can only find so much to squeeze; for a big drop, give a size, resize the picture or convert it to WEBP.

Are see-through areas kept?

Yes, fully, soft edges included, both when compressing losslessly and when reducing to a palette.

How many PNGs can I compress?

Each one counts as a file. With a free account, 20 a day, each up to 500 MB; a pass allows more, up to 2 GB a file.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
