PNG to WEBP

Make PNGs much smaller for the web by converting them to WEBP.

WEBP makes smaller image files than PNG for the same picture, which helps web pages load faster. It keeps transparency, so logos, icons and cut-outs still sit cleanly on any background, and every current browser shows it.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to convert PNG to WEBP

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your PNG files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
  4. Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Lossy or lossless

By default the WEBP is lossy, at quality 82: much smaller, with changes that are hard to spot in photos and gradients. For screenshots, diagrams and pixel art, choose Lossless in the settings; the file usually still comes out smaller than the PNG, and every pixel stays the same.

Making it lighter still

Resizing in the same step saves the most: a picture shown 800 pixels wide on a page doesn't need to be 3000 pixels wide. The Web preset does both at once, with quality 80 and at most 1920 pixels on the longest side, and never enlarges a smaller picture.

Where it's converted

PNGs of up to 50 MB convert on your device when your browser and device can manage them, so the file isn't uploaded; the WEBP is written by an encoder Filebender sends to your browser. Each one still counts as a file in your allowance, and you need to be signed in to your account. An animated PNG, or one with a colour profile outside sRGB, goes to Filebender's servers.

Questions

Will WEBP work everywhere?

Every current browser displays it, and most image editors open it. Some older software and upload forms still don't, so keep the PNG if you'll need it there.

How much smaller will it be?

It depends on the picture: photos shrink the most, flat graphics less. Each result shows its size, and Filebender tells you if one ever comes out bigger than the original.

Is transparency kept?

Yes, soft edges included. Location and camera details are removed unless you choose to keep them. With a free account you can convert 20 files a day, each up to 500 MB.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
