GIF Compressor
Shrink animated GIFs, or turn them into MP4 for a far smaller file.
Animated GIFs get big fast: every frame is a picture of at most 256 colours, stored with compression that dates from 1987. The GIF compressor shrinks them and keeps them moving.
Almost any file
Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.
No ads, no watermarks
With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.
Private by default
Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.
How to use the GIF Compressor
- Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
- Choose your GIF files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
- Choose how small: a strength, or a target size you choose. The gear button has more settings.
- Press “Compress”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.
How it shrinks a GIF
Filebender saves the GIF again with fewer colours: Light keeps up to 225 of the 256, Balanced 192 and Strong 141, with dithering to smooth the steps between shades. Fewer colours make smaller frames. Simple animations barely change, while photographic GIFs start to look grainy at Strong.
Going further
Size in pixels matters most: halving the width and height cuts every frame to a quarter of the pixels, so resize in the settings for a big saving. For a far smaller file, convert the animation to WEBP, which keeps it moving and counts as an ordinary file, or to MP4, which counts as one of your videos.
Where it's compressed
GIFs are compressed on Filebender's servers, which read every frame, and deleted an hour after converting. Give a size in KB or MB and the colours are cut until it fits, if they can be; otherwise you're told the smallest it managed, and that resizing will help.

Questions
Will the animation speed change?
No. The frames keep their timing and the GIF keeps looping as before; only the colours, and the size if you choose, change.
Why is my GIF still big?
A long or large animation has many frames to store, and fewer colours only go so far. Make it smaller in pixels, or convert it to WEBP or MP4.
Does a GIF count as a video?
No, a compressed GIF is one ordinary file. With a free account you can convert 20 files a day, each up to 500 MB.
Is Filebender free?
Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.
What happens to my files?
It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
