GIF to MP4
Turn animated GIFs into MP4 videos that are a fraction of the size.
GIF to MP4 turns an animated GIF into a short video. MP4's compression is far more efficient than GIF's, so the same animation usually takes a small fraction of the space, and it isn't limited to 256 colours.
Almost any file
Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.
No ads, no watermarks
With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.
Private by default
Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.
How to convert GIF to MP4
- Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
- Choose your GIF files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
- Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
- Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.
What changes
The video is encoded as H.264 at constant quality (CRF 23), so it plays on almost any phone, computer or website. MP4 has no transparency, so see-through parts of the GIF come out solid. H.264 needs even sizes, so an odd width or height is scaled down by a pixel.
It's worth doing when a site or app turns down large GIFs, or for an animation on your own web page, where a short video loads far quicker than the GIF would.
Looping
A GIF loops by itself. An MP4 plays once unless the player is set to loop it, which many apps do for short clips anyway; on your own website, give the video the loop setting.
How it counts
The result is a video, so a GIF made into MP4 counts as one of your videos: 2 a day with a free account, among 20 files, each up to 500 MB. For an ordinary file that still moves, convert the GIF to WEBP instead.
Conversions run on Filebender's servers, and files are deleted an hour after converting.

Questions
Will the MP4 look the same?
Yes, and colourful GIFs often look better, since MP4 isn't held to 256 colours. The animation keeps its speed.
Can I make it smaller still?
Yes. Choose a size in MB in the settings: Filebender works out the bitrate from the animation's length and encodes it twice to land just under the size you choose.
Is there sound?
No. GIFs have no sound, so the MP4 is silent.
Is Filebender free?
Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.
What happens to my files?
It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
Is there a size limit?
With a free account, each file can be up to 500 MB (about 4 minutes of HD phone video), and a batch can have up to 20 files. Any pass takes files up to 2 GB (about 15 minutes of HD video).
