HEIC to PNG

Turn iPhone photos (HEIC) into PNGs, with nothing lost.

PNG is lossless, so a HEIC photo converted to PNG keeps every pixel of the decoded photo, with no further compression. It's the choice when the photo is going into an editor, a design or a document you'll keep changing, where another round of JPG compression would add up.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your HEIC files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
  4. Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

HEIC and PNG compared

HEIC compresses photos hard, which is why phone photos take up so little room. PNG was designed for graphics, not photos, so it can't shrink them nearly as far: expect the PNG to be several times the size of the HEIC it came from. That's the cost of a format that throws nothing away.

What carries over

The picture is turned the right way up and saved at full size, unless you resize it in the same step. Depth data for portrait blur and a Live Photo's movement aren't part of a PNG, so only the still picture comes across.

The photo's location, camera and date details are dropped by default. Tick “Keep photo details” in the settings to carry them into the PNG.

Where it's converted

HEIC goes to Filebender's servers every time, since most browsers can't open it. Your photo is converted there and deleted an hour after converting, and you can delete it sooner from the results.

Questions

Is PNG better quality than JPG?

PNG adds no compression loss of its own, while JPG gives up a little detail to save space. At the default JPG quality the difference is hard to see, so JPG suits sharing and PNG suits editing.

Can I shrink the PNG?

Resize it in the settings, by percentage or to a longest side, and the file shrinks with it. The PNG itself is always saved without loss, then packed as tightly as it will go without changing a pixel.

How many photos can I convert?

Each photo counts as one file. With a free account that's 20 files a day, each up to 500 MB; passes allow more, with files up to 2 GB.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.
