JPG to WEBP

Convert JPG photos to WEBP for smaller, faster web pages.

Turning JPG photos into WEBP is one of the simplest ways to make a website quicker. At similar quality a WEBP is often a quarter to a third smaller than the JPG, and every current browser can show it.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to convert JPG to WEBP

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your JPG files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
  4. Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Quality settings

The WEBP is saved at quality 82 out of 100 by default. Because the photo was already compressed once as a JPG, there's little to gain from going higher; going lower, to around 70, trims more while most photos still look the same.

Sizes for the web

Photos straight from a camera or phone are far larger than a page needs. Set a longest side in the settings, 1920 pixels for a full-width picture or less for one in a column, and the WEBP comes out much smaller again. Untick “Allow enlarging smaller files” so pictures already smaller than that stay as they are.

Where it's converted

JPGs of up to 50 MB in standard sRGB colour convert to WEBP on your device, with an encoder your browser loads from Filebender, and aren't uploaded. They count against your allowance just as server conversions do, and your account needs to be signed in. Photos in wide colour, and settings such as a target size, use Filebender's servers.

Questions

Do I lose quality going from JPG to WEBP?

A little, since the photo is compressed a second time. At the default quality the difference is very hard to see, and for the web the saving in size is usually worth it. Keep the original JPGs for printing and archiving.

What happens to location data?

It's removed by default, with the camera and date details. Photos are turned the right way up first, so they don't appear sideways once the orientation tag is gone.

Can I convert a whole set of photos?

Yes. Add them together and download the results singly or as one ZIP. With a free account you can convert 20 files a day, each up to 500 MB; a pass raises the daily count and takes files up to 2 GB.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.

Is there a size limit?

With a free account, each file can be up to 500 MB (about 4 minutes of HD phone video), and a batch can have up to 20 files. Any pass takes files up to 2 GB (about 15 minutes of HD video).
