TIFF to JPG

Turn large TIFF scans and photos into small JPGs.

TIFF is the format of scanners, print work and archives: faithful, often uncompressed, and very large. A JPG of the same scan can be a small fraction of the size, which is what you want for email, the web or a quick look.

Almost any file

Images, vector art, video, audio, documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks and archives: more than 400 conversions. Before anything runs, Filebender says what a conversion will lose and estimates the size of video, audio and many pictures; other files show their size once converted. It compresses PDFs, pictures and videos to the size you choose.

No ads, no watermarks

With a free account: 20 files a day, 2 of them videos, each up to 500 MB. No plan has ads, and nothing is stamped on your files. A pass is one payment that never renews, and one you haven't used can be refunded in full.

Private by default

Files are deleted an hour after converting, or at once when you ask, and photo location is removed unless you choose to keep it. Photos converted to JPG, PNG or WebP are done on your device when your browser can, so they never leave it. They still need your account and count towards your plan.

How to convert TIFF to JPG

  1. Create a free account with Google or your email address, or sign in.
  2. Choose your TIFF files: drop them on the box, pick them from your computer, open them from Google Drive, or paste a link.
  3. Pick the format each file should become. The gear button has size, quality and other settings.
  4. Press “Convert”, then download each file, or all of them in one ZIP.

Multi-page TIFFs

A TIFF can hold several pages, like a document scanned in one go. Each page becomes its own JPG, numbered in order, and they're delivered together in a ZIP.

What's lost

JPG keeps 8 bits per colour, so a 16-bit scan loses the extra shades that only matter for heavy editing. Layers and transparency aren't kept; transparent areas are filled with white or a colour you choose. The JPG is saved at quality 82, and raising it in the settings helps scans with fine print.

Where it's converted

TIFF files are always converted on Filebender's servers. Each one is uploaded, converted and deleted an hour after converting. With a free account you can convert 20 files a day of up to 500 MB each, and a pass takes scans up to 2 GB.

Questions

Can I get the text out of a scanned TIFF?

Yes, with Image to Text, which reads the words from TIFF, JPG and PNG scans on Filebender's servers. Check names and numbers afterwards, since reading text from a picture is never perfect.

Will the JPG be good enough to print?

For photos and most documents, yes, at the default quality or higher. If a printer needs the size in inches, set “Print resolution (DPI)” in the settings; it's written into the file and doesn't change the pixels.

Why is my TIFF so large?

Many scanners save TIFFs uncompressed, storing every pixel in full. JPG compression was designed for photos and scans, so the same picture takes far less space.

Is Filebender free?

Yes, with a free account: 20 files every day (up to 2 of them videos), each up to 500 MB, with no watermark and no ads. Make the account with Google or your email address. Files converted on your device count the same way as the rest. If you need more, a Day, Week or Month Pass is one payment that never renews; see the Pricing page.

What happens to my files?

It depends on the file. Pictures your browser can convert itself, and everything you do with the PDF tools, from merging and splitting PDFs to putting photos into one, are handled on your device and never leave it, unless you choose to send a file to Filebender's servers. They still need your account: Filebender receives only their type and size, to count them against your plan like any other file. Everything else is converted on Filebender's servers on Google Cloud and deleted an hour after the conversion finishes, or straight away when you press “Delete files now”. Nobody looks at your files, and they're never used for anything else.

Is there a size limit?

With a free account, each file can be up to 500 MB (about 4 minutes of HD phone video), and a batch can have up to 20 files. Any pass takes files up to 2 GB (about 15 minutes of HD video).
